Aspect ratio

The shape of a frame, written as width to height, such as 9:16.

Asset

A source item such as a video, image, audio recording or generated file.

B-roll

Supporting pictures shown alongside the main story or narration.

Caption

On-screen text representing speech or relevant audio information.

Clip

A timeline item that uses all or part of a source asset.

Colour correction

Adjusting a shot to improve balance, detail and consistency.

Crop

Removing outer parts of an image from the visible frame.

Cut

An immediate change from one shot to the next; also the act of dividing or removing material.

Ducking

Lowering a music or background track while speech is present.

Easing

Changing how a movement accelerates or slows between keyframes.

Export

Producing a playable output file from the edited project.

Frame rate

The number of frames displayed per second, commonly written as fps.

Hook

The opening reason for a viewer to keep watching.

Keyframe

A property value stored at a particular point in time.

Library

The place where available source media is listed.

Rough cut

An early sequence focused on structure before finishing details.

Source time

A location in the original recording before timeline edits.

Timeline time

A location in the edited sequence.

Track

A timeline layer holding video, images, text or audio.

Transcript

A text representation of spoken words, sometimes with timing.

Trim

Changing the beginning or ending of a clip.

Voiceover

Narration heard over pictures, whether recorded or generated.
